Noted New York Gallerist Christine Berry Talks About Art

Learning about art from a market maker. (12 minutes)

In this podcast we get advice from the noted New York Gallerist Christine Berry. Christine and her business partner Martha Campbell have a unique niche in the market. I want to share with you a little about their gallery philosophy in their own words:

Our gallery fulfills an important gap in the art world, revealing a depth within American modernism that is just beginning to be understood, encompassing the many artists who were left behind due to race, gender, or geography-beyond such legendary figures as Pollock and de Kooning. Since its inception, the gallery has been especially instrumental in giving women artists long overdue consideration, an effort that museums have only just begun to take up…

Some highlights from my interview:

  • What role can art fairs play for collectors?

An art fair is like a shopping mall for art. It is a great way to see a large number of pieces and discover what attracts you. It is also a great place to start relationships with art dealers.

  • What is the best way to visit galleries in New York?

Make a plan and consider what neighborhoods have the kind of art that interests you. Not all galleries are on the ground floor. Some buildings have many galleries and the gallery which best meets your needs might be on a higher floor. Lastly, she says that when dealing with difficult NY gallery staff, stand your ground.

  • What should we consider when buying art from an estate?

When buying art from an estate you probably are dealing with more vintage pieces and it’s important that you inquire about the condition. Buying from an estate gives you a unique opportunity to see an artist’s full body of work and select the period and style that most appeals to you.

  • What do you consider when adding an artist to your stable of artists.

The First and foremost criteria is that the artist makes great art! The artist must also fit the gallery program. Christine says that even though many in the art community say they can not find any good art today, that is not the case for Barry Campbell. They see a lot of good art, even if they can’t represent all of the artists.

  • Lastly, what advice to you have for new collectors

Look at lots of art to see what you like. There is no secret formula. By educating yourself, you will gain confidence which will make advancing your education all that much easier. When you are curious about a piece of work, it’s better to pick up the phone and talk to the gallerist instead of communicating by email. You will get a more in-depth answer. Lastly, get to know the gallerist in galleries where you feel comfortable, they can be a big help!

Now you can listen in Christine’s own words!

Join us next week when we talk about limited edition prints by blue-chip artists and the publisher’ they rely on to make it happen.
