Curators Are The Unsung Hero's Who Bring Collections to Life
Greetings, art enthusiasts and fellow collectors!
Several years ago, I met a widow who bought a new house and had no furniture because her husband, who was a furniture collector, instructed in his will that all the furniture he had collected and adorned their home would be sold at auction after his death. A catalog would be developed to reflect the collection he amassed. At the time, I thought this was unusual. Still, the surviving spouse went on to build another world-class collection of museum-quality American Furniture, and the process was repeated with a catalog and auction upon her death.
Since then, I have had other friends who amassed wonderful collections; some were sold, others donated or passed to family. In all cases, I am awestruck by the genius of people like the Silvermans, who were as creative in amassing their collection as the artists they collected.
Today, I am thrilled to share the collection that Peter and I built at our home in Fort Lauderdale, without having to die. Our decision to move resulted in our realtor creating a video of our home and our opportunity to share our Florida collection. As I watched the video, I felt that despite each piece being collected individually over more than ten years, each piece is amplified by the whole. We never purchased art to go with another piece in our collection or with our decor, but somehow, each piece seems to be placed in the most advantageous way possible, and each piece adds to the quality of our daily lives.
One of the unique aspects of this video is its transient nature. As we bid farewell to our current surroundings, we recognize that the dynamics of our collection will inevitably change. New spaces will offer new perspectives, and the addition of fresh artworks (one is in the closet today, and a second is getting picked up Wednesday) will contribute to an ever-evolving tableau of creativity. This video captures a moment in time – a snapshot of a collection that will continue to grow, transform, and tell new stories in different settings.
